Pediatric Crowns

Pediatric crowns are especially beneficial when a filling isn’t enough to restore the tooth’s structure or function. They not only preserve the natural tooth until it’s ready to fall out but also support proper speech development and chewing ability.

The Process

The process of applying pediatric crowns begins with a comprehensive dental examination. The pediatric dentist evaluates the affected tooth using visual inspection and X-rays to determine the extent of damage or decay. This step is crucial in deciding whether a crown is the best treatment option or if other procedures, such as a filling or pulpotomy, are more appropriate. Once it’s confirmed that a crown is needed, the dentist will discuss the available crown types—typically stainless steel for durability or tooth-colored options for aesthetics—with the parent or guardian.

On the day of the procedure, the dentist will first numb the area around the affected tooth to ensure the child’s comfort throughout the treatment. Local anesthesia is used, and in some cases, sedation may be offered for anxious or very young patients. Once the area is numb, the dentist begins preparing the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the tooth structure so the crown will fit securely. This step ensures that the crown will sit properly on the tooth and provide long-lasting protection.

If the decay has reached the pulp of the tooth, a pulpotomy (baby root canal) may be performed before placing the crown. This involves removing the infected pulp tissue from the crown portion of the tooth while keeping the roots intact, then applying a medicated filling to promote healing and prevent further infection. Pulpotomies are common in pediatric dentistry and are often performed in conjunction with crown placement to preserve the tooth.

Once the tooth is fully prepared, the dentist selects the appropriate size crown and fits it over the tooth. Stainless steel crowns are usually pre-fabricated and can be adjusted chairside, while some tooth-colored crowns may require a mold or impression, depending on the type. The crown is then cemented into place using a dental adhesive, ensuring a snug fit and proper bite alignment. The dentist will check for any adjustments needed to ensure the crown does not interfere with the child’s bite or comfort.

After the crown is placed, the dentist will provide care instructions to ensure the crown lasts as long as possible. Children are encouraged to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day and avoiding sticky or hard foods that could dislodge the crown. Regular dental checkups are also important to monitor the crown’s condition and overall oral health. Pediatric crowns typically last until the baby tooth naturally falls out, helping to maintain function and prevent orthodontic issues as permanent teeth come in.

What Causes Cavities?

Most people assume sugar causes cavities—but the real issue is frequency.

Your child’s mouth can handle a little sugar. It’s the constant snacking and sipping that leads to tooth decay. Every time they eat or drink something with sugar or carbs, acid levels spike and start attacking enamel. It takes 20–30 minutes for the mouth to neutralize that acid—unless they’re constantly reintroducing sugar.

If your child snacks every hour, or sips juice all afternoon, their teeth never get a break.

The fix: Stick to set meal and snack times. Offer water in between. This gives their teeth time to recover and remineralize.

How Pediatric Crowns Help

Pediatric crowns help prevent cavities by covering and sealing the entire surface of a damaged or decayed tooth, creating a protective barrier against harmful bacteria, plaque, and food particles.

This shield prevents further decay from developing in the treated tooth and reduces the risk of cavities forming in weak or previously restored areas. By maintaining the tooth’s structure and integrity, crowns also make it easier for children to clean their teeth properly, supporting better oral hygiene.

Overall, pediatric crowns are a highly effective solution for preserving baby teeth and preventing future dental problems.

I love this office! My kids love it even more!! We didn’t wait longer than 5 minutes to be seen but I wouldn’t have minded if we had to wait. There was so much for my kids to do! Slide, iPads and a wave to surf on :). They also have TVs on the ceiling where each kid can choose their own movie while they are getting their teeth worked on. Makes things a breeze. They get toys at the end and a token to put in a machine to choose a toy. All my kids love that–even the older ones! The office staff was so helpful and kind. Dr. Troy is amazing! He was so patient with my kids and took time to explain their individual dental needs. He answered all my questions and I appreciate that he didn’t pressure me into any unnecessary treatments. Major bonus for me! Go see Dr. Troy!!

Dr. Troy at Hardy Smiles is our favorite! He and his staff make my kids feel at ease and excited to go to the dentist. My kids are always hoping to be a part of the No Cavity Club and I appreciate they are reminded to floss. Dr Troy has thought of every detail to help make a child’s experience at the dentist a positive one. Starting with the waiting room, decked out with a lighthouse slide, iPads and a giant wave with a surfboard! My kids watched a movie while their teeth were cleaned and ended the visit with a prize machine. Couldn’t have asked for a better visit!
