Sealants
Dental sealants are a powerful preventive tool designed to protect children’s teeth—especially the back molars—from cavities. Combined with regular checkups, good oral hygiene, and a healthy diet, sealants are a simple but highly effective way to keep your child’s teeth strong and cavity-free.

What Are Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth—primarily molars—to prevent tooth decay. They fill in the deep grooves and pits where food and bacteria often get trapped.
Why Sealants Are Important for Kids
Children are especially prone to cavities, and sealants provide a strong line of defense during the early years when oral hygiene habits are still developing. Applying sealants can significantly reduce the risk of decay in permanent molars.
Quick, Painless Application
The sealant process is fast, easy, and completely non-invasive. No drilling or numbing is required—just a thorough cleaning of the tooth, followed by the application and curing of the sealant with a special light.
Long-Lasting Protection
Sealants can last several years with proper care, offering lasting protection during critical stages of a child’s dental development. Regular dental visits allow your dentist to check the condition of the sealants and reapply them if needed.
Cost-Effective Preventive Care
Compared to the cost of treating cavities, dental sealants are an affordable preventive solution. Many dental insurance plans cover sealants for children, making it a smart investment in your child’s long-term oral health.
Ideal Timing for Sealants
The best time to apply dental sealants is soon after a child’s permanent molars erupt—typically around ages 6 and 12. Applying sealants early ensures maximum protection during the years when teeth are most vulnerable to decay.
Safe and Effective
Dental sealants are made from safe, BPA-free materials and have been proven effective through decades of use in pediatric dentistry. They form a strong, invisible shield that guards teeth without affecting normal chewing or speaking.
Part of a Preventive Care Plan
Sealants work best when combined with other preventive practices like brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups. Together, they create a comprehensive defense against cavities and other oral health issues.
Minimal Maintenance Needed
Once applied, sealants require very little maintenance. Your child can brush and eat normally, and the dentist will simply check the sealants during routine exams to ensure they’re intact and doing their job.
Encouraging Lifelong Oral Health
By protecting teeth early with sealants, you help your child avoid painful cavities and build a positive attitude toward dental care. This proactive approach sets the stage for strong, healthy teeth well into adulthood.

All About Sealants
Dental sealants are a powerful preventive tool designed to protect children’s teeth—especially the back molars—from cavities. These molars have deep grooves and pits where food and bacteria can easily get trapped, making them difficult to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush. Sealants are made of a thin, protective coating that is painted onto the chewing surfaces of the teeth, effectively sealing out plaque and debris. The process is quick, painless, and typically completed during a regular dental visit, making it an easy way to reduce the risk of tooth decay during a child’s most cavity-prone years.
At Peak Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend sealants as part of a proactive approach to your child’s dental health. Once applied, sealants can last for several years and provide ongoing protection during critical stages of oral development. Our team ensures each sealant is applied with precision and care, helping to safeguard your child’s smile and minimize the need for future dental treatments. Combined with regular checkups, good oral hygiene, and a healthy diet, sealants are a simple but highly effective way to keep your child’s teeth strong and cavity-free.
